2005
12 Hours at the Point PhilsTireService.com Team GTI went to Summit Point, West Virginia intent on repeating their class-winning success from the Charge of the Headlight Brigade 13-hour event, achieved 6 months earlier at Virginia International Raceway. This marathon ended as happily as did that one, though the victory was admittedly not quite as sweet due to a lack of really serious ITB class competition. The team's 1996 Golf GTI was upgraded significantly beyond the specifications in which it ran the VIR event with new Hoosier race tires from PhilsTireService.com, ongoing technical support from KONI struts, and engineering and parts support from Bildon Motorsport. Two members of last year's driving squad - past SCCA® Run-Offs® medallist Greg Amy (Middletown, CT) and car owner Kirk Knestis (Greensboro, NC) - returned, and were joined by Northeast veteran Phil Phillips (Haverstraw, NY) and journeyman NE Division SCCA racer Jeff Lawton (Colchester, CT). Greg Amy qualified the Team GTI entry 34th of the 56 total entries, and first of only two ITB cars - the other being the BMW of Wheeler, Toy, and Shelton - the last of the three having been part of the driving team that finished second in ITB at VIR in 2004. |

The race started at noon on Saturday and was scheduled to run until midnight, giving substantial nighttime racing. Phil Phillips - owner of PhilsTireService.com, in the car for the first time - started the car and ran a nearly trouble-free stint, having only minor problems with rough drivers and rubber build-up on the tires, causing an imbalance issue. Jeff Lawton replaced Phillips but the Golf refused to take a full load of fuel during the stop - a problem that would reappear sporadically throughout the event. This left Lawton able to complete only a short stint, before handing off to Kirk Knestis, who did get a full tank so was able to stay in the car for a full 85 minutes. Greg Amy took over about a third of the way through the half-day event and ticked off quick laps while dealing with traffic. Phillips followed him and was well into his second stint when the track went under full course caution, to clean up a serious accident involving the team's sister car - a Spec Miata being driven by Jeff Frederick, Nick Craft, Tom Clendenin, and Evan Webb. Webb was in the cockpit when the incident occurred but walked away from a big impact, none the worse for wear. The Kessler Engineering car was substantially damaged however and would not continue. |

While clearly not as bad off as that, the number 42 Golf did have a few minor issues to contend with, including Jeff Lawton's brush with a Miata that left the driver's side scuffed with blue paint. Notice Lawton's signature among the paint marks in the picture to the right, added with a marker during a pit stop. More costly in terms of time was the failure of a rear wheel bearing, discovered during Lawton's second stint, after he replaced Phillips at the wheel. The offending part was adjusted as Knestis got back in the car for his last run, but he quickly determined that it was not going to last the night. Knestis circulated as the team prepared to undertake repairs, at which point he was called in. Crew members Cameron Conover (Greensboro, NC, in the image right and below) and Bill Miller (Flagtown, NJ) completed repairs quickly enough that only slightly more than 16 minutes was lost in the process. The car was refueled and Knestis got back in, completing an additional 70 minutes before quitting for the night. It was well and truly dark when Greg Amy jumped in for the last rotation of the race. Interestingly, he turned the team's fastest race lap (1:36.053) just five laps before the overall leader took the checkered flag to secure class honors for the second enduro running. |
