Team GTI

2007 12 Hours at the Point
12-Hour Enduro at Summit Point Motorsports Park

As improbable as it might be, Conover Motor Sports-PhilsTireService.com Team GTI was frustrated by freak transmission troubles for the second endurance event in a row, again finishing behind the winning earlier model VW Golf of enduro nemesis Team York.

Kirk Knestis (Charleston, WV) started the blue 42 Golf for the team's third shot at the 1/2-day classic and had an uneventful stint, turning the car over to Acura pilot Jon Kofod at the two hour mark. Kofod (Reston, VA) proved quick in his debut with the team, bettering the team owner's times and staying well out of trouble.

It's worth noting that no bodywork will be required before Team GTI's next race - a positive outcome of an uneventful event that saw the Summit 12 run for the first time without any full-course caution periods. A smaller entry list probably contributed to the calm but regardless, this was the most incident-free enduro campaigned by the Conover-prepared team in the last two seasons.

Phil Phillips (Haverstraw, NY) took over from Kofod on schedule, with approximately 4 hours in the books. Conover Motor Sports had installed a 25-gallon fuel cell in the back of the Golf this spring, making it capable of 4-hour stints. However, team strategists Lee Grimes and Greg Amy (the latter out of his regular driving position and into a crucial management role this season) opted for shorter rotations. Concerns centered on the potential impact of driver fatigue due to hot conditions, but the flexibility and quick-fill feature afforded by the larger tank are thought to give the team an advantage over the stock 13.5-gallon unit, regardless of human frailties.

Phillips impressed his team by turning their fastest race lap, during a solid run to extend their lead to more than two laps at mid race - at which point problems struck, in the form of failed limited slip differential...

Team boss Cameron Conover (occupied post-race with a move to new facilities in Durham, NC) has not yet definitively assessed the root of the problem, but preliminary indications suggest that the clutch elements of the diff simply chose this particular evening to wear beyond acceptable tolerances, creating slippage and generating excessive heat.

Conover, assisted by team technicians Ryan "RJ" Jenkins, Andy Lancaster, and Benny Folk, required only an hour to replace the transmission and clutch, as fourth driver Matt Brown (Alexandria, VA) waited patiently to get back on track. In a cruel twist, Brown's return was delayed even further by a malfunctioning clutch cable - putting the intrepid team over 70 laps behind their competition once the additional problem was diagnosed and repairs were completed.

Unfortunately, there's no fighting back from that kind of deficit. Brown turned quick, consistent laps for a long turn at the wheel as day turned to night, but luck held for the class-leading York entry as they churned untroubled through the remaining hours.

Knestis and Kofod each took an additional turn in the waning hours - the latter's qualifying-time pace in total darkness with a compromise spare gearbox raising eyebrows in the pits and providing an up-beat end to a frustrating finish.

Plans and preparation for Team GTI's assault at the return of the Longest Day 24-hour endurance (Nelson Ledges, OH) are well underway. Knestis will be joined by Conover ITA hotshoe Bowie Gray, Canadian Matt Graham, and Fred Snow, who will bring years of endurance racing headlight experience to the team.
